FRIES PRIZE FOR NEW
CHIPPIE
By Gavin Foster THE
Island's newest fish and chip shop has become the first to win a
prestigious quality award.
Fat Harry's Gourmet Fish and
Chip Shop has become one of only five in Hampshire and the IW to win
the Seafish Industry Authority Fish Friers' Quality
Award. Although it only opened in March, the planning and
preparation has paid dividends. Owner Jon Platt, who formerly ran
a chip shop in the town and before that started Chubbies in
Shanklin, which he has since sold, said he made sure all the
equipment installed in the new High Street venture was the very
best. "However, all the best equipment is nothing unless you have
good people working there. That is why we have Gary Beaumont as
manager, who is an experienced IW chef," Jon said. The award
followed a rigorous survey of the premises by an inspector, who took
into account everything from the quality of the oil used to fry
chips to the sugar content in potatoes. "He finished up by
tasting our product and must have liked what he got," said
Jon. Although the inspection was fastidious, one part of the menu
not explored was the business's trump card, Fat Harry's giant
burger, a cholestrorol-laden gastronomic gargantuan that even
carries a health warning on the store's hi-tech menu
screen. Standing at eight inches tall and impossible to consume
without a knife and fork, it comprises two quarter-pound battered
burgers, battered onion, three slices of cheese, a fried egg and a
salsa sauce. "To be honest, it never ceases to amaze me what
people eat," said Jon, who runs the business with his wife,
Lindsay. He said business had already been extremely brisk and
there are plans to open five more outlets under the Fat Harry's
brand across the Island.
